Author, Journalist. He was a prolific German-Jewish author, mostly writing about Nazi Germany. Starting in 1920, he began to cover sports events and became a theater critic. Throughout his career, he was published in the German language as well as English. Escaping Nazi Germany, he fled to Paris before reaching the United States in 1936. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy before transferring to the Army and becoming a war correspondent. Riess is known for covering the fall of the Third Reich at the end of World War II as a war correspondent. He wrote at least 100 books, with several on Nazi Germany, including his most well-known, "The Nazis Go Underground," in 1944. Over his long career, he covered not only subjects related to the war and Germany but also wrote about various celebrities and sports and translated many books from German to English. His biographies include Nazi propaganda leader Joseph Goebbels, United States First Lady Jackie Onassis, and the German conductor's "Furtwangler: Music and Politics" in 1953. He received his formal education in various schools throughout Europe. He married Austrian actress Heidemarie Hatheyer in 1952.
